New Delivery Channel: Browser Push Notifications

We had it in beta, and now it’s officially live: you can receive notifications directly in your browser!

How to Enable Browser Push

When following a feed, simply select Browser Push as your delivery channel and allow notifications when prompted by your browser.

That’s it! When a new update is detected you’ll receive a notification on your device, without having to check your email or open follow.it.

When Should You Use Browser Push?

As it’s Browser Push, it’s pushy. That’s great for time-sensitive updates, such as breaking news, website downtime, or security alerts.

However, it may also interrupt your daily work. The philosophy behind follow.it is to reduce noise and information overload.

For less urgent updates, we recommend the My News delivery channel (which you can check whenever you like) or email digests such as Newspaper (one daily email) or Magazine (one weekly email).

The main alternatives to Browser Push are the follow.it mobile app, single email delivery, and Telegram. However, Browser Push can still have an edge (and not just in Edge!) in the following cases:

  • No app installation: Receive notifications without installing a separate app.
  • Device-specific control: Allow notifications in some browsers or devices while blocking them in others, using your browser’s notification settings.
  • No inbox clutter: Get notified without filling up your email inbox.
  • No third-party account: Unlike Telegram, Browser Push doesn’t require an account with another service.

You don’t even need to keep your browser open in some cases. For example, Safari on macOS can deliver notifications even when it’s closed. Firefox, on the other hand, needs to be running. For Chrome and Edge, it depends on your operating system and background settings.
